The six CGN brakevans were built for the Port Lincoln Division in 1968. Their external design generally resembled the broad gauge 8300 class, although they were smaller and with a passenger compartment at one end (the arrangement introduced with the 'Dolly Varden' brakevans). They originally rode on reclaimed 1880-era plate frame bogies, but these were replaced with ride control bogies (salvaged from redundant Peterborough Division ON ore wagons) in 1975.
